Journal
In my journal you can find my ongoing notes, ideas, research and thinking on my own health, performance and longevity. These observations are specific to me, and you should always talk to your doctor before making any changes.
1. Combating my Lp(a) level
My work and ideas to try and reduce the impact of my moderate genetic Lp(a) risk
2. Double-checking my estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
Using a Cystatin C test after a worrying eGFR based on Creatinine suggested I might have early stage kidney disease
3. An exploration of fats prompted by my confusion over whether frying with extra virgin olive oil creates trans fats
I had read conflicting advice on whether it is safe to fry in extra virgin olive oil. In digging into this deeper I realised I needed to learn a bit more about fats - which is also useful for my work to reduce the impact of my genetic Lp(a) level.
4. An exploration of why my Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI) is lower than expected
My DEXA scan gave me a very low ALMI score which I found hard to reconcile with the amount of training I do and my strength and fitness compared to my age and gender peer group. I dug into this topic a bit with the scan consultant to understand this in more detail
5. Improving my iron profile
In Jan 2026 my routine blood testing flagged up that some tests in my iron profile were out of the normal range. This prompted me to understand the measures a bit better, identify a good supplement, and re-test to look for any improvement.
6. Investigating Nitric Oxide
Nitric Oxide (NO) has a key role in vasodilation, blood pressure, and peripheral diffusion as well as sporting performance. It is thus interesting to me.
